A Night at the Movies

The weather had been looking very questionable all day, and there had been a few times when I had thought it might be more sensible to break out the Japanese Midget (Subaru) than the British one. Not that I was worried about getting wet, if I needed to put the hood up my rear window has hazed to the point of being impossible to see out of, so makes driving unpleasant. However as it’s not a long drive home from Bass Hill for me and the British Midget is always more fun anyway it won the day.

Turning up at Parramatta Park revealed a very disappointing turnout of members. What happened to all those people at the SCCA Chrissy Party who had commented they were really looking forward to going to the drive-in???

The original intention was to go for a drive down to Campbelltown to pick up any southern members wanting to join in, however as there didn’t seem to be any, Bill McLennan decided to lead us on one of his now becoming famous Mystery Drives. These drive seem to be just as big a mystery to Bill as to those following him! But you’ve go to admit they’re always fun.

After a grand tour of the southern suburbs we arrived at thr Drive-in gates to find we still had an hour to kill before the gates actually opened. Col Skelton suggested that no Sprite Drive would feel complete for him without a refresher at a pub. We then headed off in search of the long lost Bankstown Aero Club at Bankstown Airport (closed down about 5 years ago) and ended up at the Flyers Inn, next to Bankstown airport.

Time to head back to the drive-inn, and Bill trying to impress us all with his detailed knowledge of the no through roads by taking us down some of them.

On arrival at the drive-inn we managed to line the cars up in one row, making sure we all had speakers to park next too. We certainly managed to attract a reasonable amount of attention from the other movie goers (they were probably wondering who these crazy people were).

Dinner consisted of the exquisite selection of Burgers or Fish and Chips and Coke. Guaranteed to fill you up and stay undigestable in your stomach for hours (days) on end.

The movies were kids movies, therefore very appropriate to our mentalities. Flubber was about an absent minded professor, the storyline was a little tired, but was still very funny. George of the Jungle, based on a cartoon of the same name, was absolutely hilarious! All throughout both movies I could hear the distinctive laughters of both Wendy Gibbs at one end of the parked cars and Mike Robson at the other.

Part way through the movie Gavin and Johanne reported being hit by lollies falling from the sky. Louise and myself who were sitting in the car next to them know nothing about this.... honestly!

Of course we all had to watch out for Col Skelton who had a habit of sneaking up on people and flashing his snake at them, snake light that is.

This would be one of the most fun Sprite Drives I’ve been on, and I’m certain everyone else felt the same. A job well done Bill! What movie are we going to see next?
